Protest, Party, Power: Stories for January 19, 2025

The world is on the precipice of an American authoritarian regime, a prospect which was unthinkable for over two centuries. The second inauguration of Donald Trump is a grim downturn in post-WWII history. This is uncharted territory for America and the world at large.

Protest Against Authoritarianism in Washington, DC

25,000 protesters showed up and filled the streets of Washington DC on Saturday. They braved the cold temps (unlike Trump who moved his inauguration indoors) to show their disapproval of the incoming regime.

[Side note: I will now refer to the 47th presidency as a regime, not an administration. Trump and his Federalist Society supporters want to erase the modern administrative state that manages the benefits of government for every American, so let’s call it what it is: an authoritarian regime.]

Happy to see the “People’s March” drew a diverse crowd of VOCAL antagonists. Civil disobedience and protest are occasions that Boomers to Zoomers can get together and find common ground. There’s nothing like a protest that links generations so well. Believers are gonna believe, age be damned.

It was marked as a modestly small event, yet the prospects of more to come seems good. The US will likely see a steady stream of these protests, marches, and even sincere acts of civil disobedience in the coming years. I find the diverse messages in the crown to be a great sign of unity. From “Trust Black Women” to “ERA Now” and my favorite, “Science is Real” the mood and enthusiasm is super!

Trump’s Pre-Inauguration Party: A Contrast

In contrast to thousands of citizens fighting to keep their agency and power now that we know the next presidency will be a period of suffering and pain for so many Americans, Trump held a pre-inauguration party at one of his golf clubs in Virginia. The MAGA glitterati arrived to verbally fellate the new president. His MAGA clubhouse of choice is now the Trump National Washington DC golf course, the one where he cut down over 400 trees to have a better view of the Potomac River and installed a fake Civil War monument commemorating the entirely fictional “River of Blood” battle. Totally on brand.

I eluded above about the shift from an outdoor inauguration and parade, to indoors because of the cold weather in Washington, DC. Many have reminded us that Reagan moved his second swearing in ceremony indoors to the Capitol rotunda. Well, here’s another reminder: Regan was also a geriatric goof that shouldn’t have been in the position to be the 40th president.

JFK, Carter, Regan I, and Obama all gave sub-zero speeches. They were able to handle the cold for a short while – but that’s not what the change is about. Trump is ashamed of his dick size and so everything else in his life has to be HUGE as a result. Largest crowds, biggest margin of victory, 40 Wall St. being the tallest building moments after the WTC towers fell on 9/11. The list is endless and exhausting. With plunging temps expected on Monday, he doesn’t want undesirable pictures of a few MAGA chuds standing around on a bleak, barren Capitol Mall.

NYC’s Political Landscape: Power Dynamics Under Trump

NYC Mayor and cop-brained Eric Adams is facing federal bribery charges, but he’s not letting that stop him from meeting with President-elect Donald Trump. In a private meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Adams discussed issues like city infrastructure, migrant asylum-seekers, and the Middle East crisis. Ha ha ha, no, no, sorry, my bad. They discussed how Adams will allow ICE (storm)troopers to operate an extrajudicial roundup of undocumented people in NYC in exchange for Trump pardoning hizzoner’s federal crimes.

You know, all these Federalist Society types who drone on about states’ rights might be on to something good. How about state prosecutors step up and indict MAGA criminals? Why leave it to the “bloated swampy federal government” to apply the law (as slowly and unjustly as they feel like)? I’m no legal expert, but I can imagine federal election law overlaps state election law fairly well. Go get him Letitia.

Adams has been a consistent disappointment for left-liberal voters in a deep blue city. Again, Progressive candidates failed to do anything, running a collection of nobodies. That idiot Andrew Yang, who stands for nothing beside being an empty shell of nothing, was the only ‘legitimate’ option in the primary besides Adams. In the general election, MAGA ran Curtis Sliwa, the former vigilante leader of the Guardian Angels. Adams CRUSHED him with well over 60% of the vote. New Yorkers handed Adams a gigantic mandate, then got crapped on as a reward.

New Yorkers are well known as a collectively tough bunch. They will need to step up to that reputation in the coming weeks, if the expected immigration raids start as rumored on Tuesday, the day after Trump becomes 47. Adams will certainly have made a deal of some sort. There is no possibility that cop-boy will resist ICE operations in direct conflict with Trump. Adams is facing up to 45 years in prison for bribery, wire fraud, and conspiracy. Even if he were to get a light sentence of 4 years, his public life is over. He cannot risk even going to trial, so we will probably get open season hunting of undocumented people throughout the five boroughs as soon as next week.
