Right-wing attorney Sidney Powell (68) has pleaded guilty to criminal charges related to the Georgia election interference case involving former President Donald Trump and numerous other defendants. Powell, aka The Kraken releaser, who gained notoriety for spreading baseless voter fraud conspiracies following Trump’s loss in the 2020 election, has now admitted to six misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with the performance of election duties.
The plea agreement, reached just days before her trial was set to begin, has sent shockwaves through the political landscape. Powell’s sudden change of heart could potentially put pressure on her co-defendants to consider their own plea deals. This development strengthens the upcoming RICO case of the alleged election interference of other high-profile figures.
Under the terms of the agreement, Powell will face six years of probation, a $6,000 fine, and $2,700 in restitution to the state of Georgia. Notably, she will not serve any jail time, but she will be required to write an apology letter to the state and its citizens. Additionally, Powell has agreed to testify truthfully in upcoming trials involving her co-defendants, including former President Trump.
The indictment against Powell initially included seven felony charges, including racketeering and conspiracy to commit election fraud. It alleged a wide-ranging effort to overturn Trump’s loss to President Joe Biden in Georgia’s 2020 presidential election. Powell was accused of participating in a scheme to unlawfully breach election equipment and tamper with voting machines. She was present at a meeting in the White House, where election-flipping strategies were discussed, including the appointment of Powell as a special counsel to investigate voter fraud allegations.
Powell’s guilty plea paves the way for her full testimony in upcoming RICO trials scheduled for this year and 2024. As a defendant who has pleaded guilty, her testimony will be crucial for the prosecution’s efforts to secure a conviction against Donald Trump.
